Fort Myers Beach is a town that is situated in Lee County, Florida and is situated on Estero Island. The town covers an area of six square miles and has a population of over sixty-five hundred residents. The island, along with the island of San Carlos make up the Fort Myers Beach community and compose the Cape Coral–Fort Myers Metropolitan Statistical Area. Fort Myers Beach has a local government that is composed of a mayor and a five member council. A town manager makes sure that the plans of the council is implemented on a daily basis. The town’s demographics can be broken down in the following manner; There are two thousand families in thirty-four hundred households living in the town. Of these thirty-four hundred households, eight percent had children under the age of eighteen, fifty-four percent were married couples living together, four percent had a female head of household with no male present and thirty-nine percent were non-families. The ethnic makeup of the town can be broken down in the following manner: ninety-seven percent were white, eight tens of a percent were African American, four tenths of a percent were Native American, three tenths of a percent are Asian, and Latinos made up three and a half percent of the population.
A popular attraction in Fort Myers Beach is Lovers Key. Lovers Key, also known as the Carl E. Johnson State Park, covers an area of seven hundred and twelve acres and is situated on Lovers Key and three other barrier islands which include Inner Key, Long Key and Black Island. It lies ten and a half miles west of U.S. Interstate 75 at exit 116. This state park attracts tourists from around the world with a plethora of activities. The main feature of these estates is a seventeen acre botanical garden and a historical museum. This area was the winter homes f Thomas Alva Edison and Henry Ford. It was constructed in the late nineteenth century for Thomas Edison and was originally known as Seminole Lodge. During World War I, Henry Ford bought the lot next to it. After World War II, the widow of Thomas Edison deeded the property to the city. During the 1980s, the city then bought Henry Ford’s residence. Today, the botanical gardens contain a variety of different plant species that have been taken from all over the world. These plant species include Holmskioldia sanguinea, Blighia sapida, Cananga odorata, Parmentiera cereifera, Leea coccinea, Epidendrum ciliare, Acalypha hispida, Cattleya hybrid, Bougainvillea spectabilis, Ficus auriculata, Bougainvillea glabra, Thunbergia erecta, Kigelia africana, Cordyline terminalis, Clerodendrum speciosissimum, Hibiscus schizopetalus, Tibouchina semidecandra, Plumbago auriculata, Spathoglottis plicata, Artocarpus heterophyllus, Tabernaemontana corymbosa, Ixora chinensis, Malvaviscus arboreus, Ficus benghalensis, Arenga pinnata, Dendrobium, Chorisia speciosa and Calliandra haematocephala.
